Who needs braces?

If your dentist sees that teeth are crooked, seem a little crowded, or are overlapping when you bite, they might suggest orthodontic treatment.

When’s the best age to get braces?

Most kids get braces around 10-13 years old, once permanent teeth have erupted. Some children require braces sooner due to issues with their bite or spacing of front teeth. The dentist will be able to catch these issues and refer you when needed. Orthodontic treatment is also successful in correcting teeth in older teens and adults as well.

How do they work?

Braces apply a consistent, soft pressure on your teeth, gradually changing their position over time.

Are there different kinds of braces?

Yes. The most common type is metal braces. There are also ceramic and clear custom trays.

How long will I have braces?

Most kids wear braces for 1-3 years. It depends on how well you take care of them and the severity of the problem!

Is it just about straightening my teeth?

Straightening teeth is not just about a better cosmetic smile. Straightening teeth with orthodontics also helps prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and helps with difficulty chewing and speaking.

Can I play sports or play instruments that use mouthpieces with braces?

Yes! Your mouth will need to adjust until you feel comfortable, but you’re free to keep playing! For athletes, consider getting a mouthguard made for added protection. We can customize them, just ask us!

What foods should I avoid?

Sticky ones like gum, toffee, or caramels and too much sugar should be avoided when you’re wearing braces. We’ll give you a list of foods to avoid to keep your braces clean and working properly!
