These actions often help children feel safe, comforted, and ready for sleep. While they are considered completely normal in the first few years of life, parents often worry about the long-term impact these habits may have on their child’s teeth, jaw, and speech development. Understanding when the habit is harmless and when it becomes a concern is the key to supporting healthy oral growth.

Babies are born with a natural sucking reflex, which is why thumb-sucking and pacifier use are so common. This reflex helps babies feel secure, reduces stress, and can even make it easier for them to fall asleep. For most children, these habits fade naturally by age 2 to 4. However, when the habit continues beyond these early years, it may start to affect oral health.

Dr. Kimberly encourages families to bring their child for a first visit by age one. We offer free checkups for children under 2 to start keeping an eye on early development as well as begin to help them feel comfortable visiting the dentist.

If a child continues to suck their thumb or use a pacifier past age 3 or 4, parents should pay close attention to their oral development. At this point, prolonged sucking can begin to affect how teeth and jaws grow. Common problems include open bite, where the front teeth do not meet properly, or an overbite, where the upper teeth push forward. The pressure can also narrow the roof of the mouth, cause changes in jaw alignment, and lead to mispronunciation or speech delays. While these changes may seem minor at first, they often require professional care later.

Both habits have the potential to affect teeth, but they are not equal in terms of management. Pacifiers are easier for parents to control since they can be limited to certain times of day or removed altogether. Thumb-sucking, on the other hand, is harder to stop because children always have access to their thumbs. For some families, transitioning a thumb-sucker to a pacifier can be a helpful first step before beginning the weaning process. While pacifiers can also affect oral development if used too long, it is usually much easier to end pacifier use than to stop thumb-sucking. Parents often find that the short-term struggle of pacifier weaning is much more manageable than the long-term costs of orthodontic treatment.

When thumb-sucking continues beyond pre-school age, the likelihood of needing early phase orthodontic treatment increases. Children may require braces earlier than usual or need a special device called a habit appliance. This appliance is fitted inside the mouth and discourages thumb-sucking by making the action less comfortable or even possible. While effective, these treatments can be costly and stressful for children. Breaking the habit earlier not only prevents these interventions but also supports natural, healthy development of the teeth and jaws. Visit our orthodontic care page to see how we help guide healthy growth.

Helping a child move past thumb-sucking or pacifier use takes patience and consistency. Begin gently weaning from the habit around age 2, when most children are capable of finding other sources of comfort. Offer alternatives such as soft toys, blankets, or calming bedtime routines. For older toddlers, reward systems like sticker charts can encourage progress. Staying positive is crucial—avoid punishing or scolding, as this can cause stress and make the habit harder to break. In some cases, thumb guards or pediatric-approved bitter-tasting nail solutions may help, but it is best to discuss these with your child’s dentist first.

Q: Is thumb-sucking more harmful than pacifier use?
A: Yes. Thumb-sucking is harder to control and often leads to more serious dental issues if it continues past age 4.

Q: Can I switch my child from thumb-sucking to a pacifier first?
A: Yes. This can be a helpful first step since pacifiers are easier to manage and remove.

Q: What happens if my child keeps sucking their thumb after age 4?
A: They may require early orthodontic care, including braces or a habit appliance to prevent further bite issues.

Q: Is it worth the struggle to wean off the pacifier?
A: Absolutely. It’s often much less expensive and easier than correcting problems later with braces.

Q: How do I know if the habit is affecting my child’s teeth?
A: Your dentist can check for bite changes or palate narrowing during a routine exam. Visible signs include gaps, open bite, or a forward-pushed front tooth.

Happy New Year!

January is the perfect time to reflect for a few minutes on all we’ve accomplished in the past year and what we can do in the months ahead to make this year even better. Now, we know your new year’s resolutions probably haven’t always included taking better care of your teeth, but why not make this the year for great oral health?!

To get you started, here are 3 simple habits that can make a world of difference for your teeth.

1. Replace your toothbrush right now!

That’s right, new year, new toothbrush! Start the year off with a clean slate (and for ideas on what to do with your old one, check this out!).

Before you brush your teeth tonight, pull out your phone and take it a step further. Open up your calendar app and scroll to the date that’s 3 months from today. Add a new event, name it “Replace My Toothbrush”, and set it to repeat every 3 months. Now you’ll never have to think about it again!

2. Don’t forget about your tooth enamel…

We love when our patients are enthusiastic about brushing their teeth. That’s great! However, make sure you’re waiting about 30 minutes or so to brush after you eat. Depending on what you’ve just eaten, brushing too quickly can brush away your tooth enamel, especially if you’ve had something acidic like oranges or lemons. Try to remind yourself of this this year, and you’ll have stronger teeth by the time next year rolls around.

3. What’s your toothbrush doing when you’re not using it?

Toothbrushes spend a lot more time hanging out on your sink than they do brushing your teeth. This gives them a lot of time to accumulate germs and bacteria if they’re not stored correctly. Make sure you thoroughly rinse after each brushing and store your toothbrush upright to air dry. This gives the water somewhere to go and can extend its life a bit.

Simple enough, right? Here’s to a new year and better oral health!

We’re often asked how to get a sparklier smile.

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures today and there are several ways to go about it. Before we get into all the options available to you, it’s important to understand that everyone may not be a candidate for tooth whitening.

Here are some reasons why teeth change color in the first place.

What causes discoloration in teeth?

Natural Tooth Color & Age

While they always resemble a color that looks like white, our teeth vary in their shades of yellow, brown, white, and grey from the beginning. As we age, that color intensifies as our teeth are exposed to constant brushing (at least two minutes at a time, twice a day!) and other substances.

Trauma

If your teeth sustain an injury, they could crack or react in a way that produces more dentin. Cracks make room for more dirt and debris to get stuck and dentin is a layer beneath the enamel that has a darker, yellowish color. Both can cause your teeth to darken.

Medications

Some medications contain chemicals that cause discoloration on your tooth enamel. We’d argue this likely isn’t a reason to stop taking important medications. But it could offer an explanation as to why your teeth might appear darker.

Tobacco Use

The nicotine and tar contained in cigarettes and other tobacco products stain teeth both topically as well as intrinsically. Over time, these chemicals can soak into your teeth, leaving behind unsavory, yellowish stains.

Diet

If eaten excessively, some acidic foods like citrus fruits and vinegar can erode your enamel, causing the more yellow dentin layer to show through more pronounced. Beverages like coffee, red wine, and sodas have intense color pigments that stick to your tooth enamel. So keep the consumption of these to a minimum if you want to keep your teeth sparkly white!

Depending on what has caused teeth to change in color, a teeth whitening procedure may be a good solution to brightening them up. However, not all teeth can be whitened successfully. Veneers, crowns, and fillings will not whiten. Also having a more naturally grayish tone to your teeth can affect the outcome. So be sure to speak with your dentist before committing to a procedure.

How does teeth whitening work?

When dentists refer to teeth whitening, they’re usually referring to a noninvasive procedure that involves using a combination of materials to break up stains. Technically, this is “bleaching”. This combo will be more concentrated than what you’ll find in your whitening toothpaste or gels, but works in the same way to break up stains on your tooth enamel.

Are you ready for a whiter smile? We’ve got several options for you to choose from.
